Peru establishes National Potato Day

National Day for the potato in Peru, the country that gave the world one of its most important food crops.
Peru, a major producer and considered the birthplace of the potato, recently introduced a National Day for the potato.
The potato is currently the fourth most important food crop worldwide with production of 300 million tons. Peru, considered the birthplace of the potato, has largely contributed to the diversity of varieties and has plantations that cover over 296,000 hectares.
Peru has declared May 30 as National Day for the Potato. The day is intended to promote the potato, its diversity and increase its consumption.
