China has increased its trade with Africa

More agricultural products from Africa can enter the Chinese market. Trade between China and Africa hit record highs in 2021.

 

According to data from the China Customs Agency, trade between China and Africa increased by 35% in 2021, reaching a record high of USD 254 billion. This growth has been driven by an increase in Chinese exports to the African continent but also by the easing of requirements that allow more agricultural products from Africa to enter the Chinese market.

 

The South China Morning Post reported that South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe are among the African countries that recently signed revised protocols allowing them to access the Chinese market. Thus, last December, South Africa signed a protocol on the export of pears to China and then shipped its first batch of lemons to the Chinese market. Agreements have also been made with Tanzania and Kenya for lawyers.

 

According to research and consultancy firm Oxford Business Group, African exports to China will continue to grow. At a Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting, China pledged to import USD 300 billion of African products over the next 3 years and invest USD 40 billion in infrastructure projects in Africa.
