After Chinese bans on shipments from Taiwan that hit various fish products but also pineapples and citrus fruits over the past year, Taiwan is anticipating further bans.
According to Taiwanese media, the COA (Council of Agriculture) seeks to reduce the proportion of agricultural and fishery products exported to China to less than 2%. In order to limit the anticipated effects of Chinese bans which may occur at any time and thus impact Taiwanese products.
Taiwan and China signed an economic cooperation agreement in June 2010 that listed 539 items that Taiwan could export to China duty-free. Since this agreement, 18 of these items are now prohibited from being imported into China.
The COA also plans to step up rapid export diversification, especially to the United States, Japan and Southeast Asian countries.
