Onion is an indispensable ingredient in Indian cuisine and the most "sensitive" vegetable politically (Photo: indiamart.com).
While crop forecasts were good, onion crops were hit by drought and then rains causing a shortage that has tripled the price in recent months.
To combat this price increase the government has taken action. By banning onion exports and tackling the hoarding of onions. Retailers and wholesalers now have strict limits on the volumes they can keep and they have to sell the rest.
These measures have lowered the retail prices of onions - 25 rupees a kilo a few months ago and then 80 rupees ($ 1.12) a few days ago - at 50 rupees per kilogram. If urban consumers are relieved, farmers complain of prices being too low.
The onion is an important export for India which shipped about 2.2 million tons to neighboring countries last year. In Bangladesh, the price of onions has doubled in less than a week, in Nepal onions have become a rare commodity.
