The obesity pandemic swept the world long before the COVID-19 pandemic. There appears to be a link between excess weight and the severity / mortality of COVID-19.
According to studies, most patients with COVID-19 were overweight or obese. For example, in Britain 78% of affected patients were either overweight or obese, and overweight people accounted for 62% of all coronavirus deaths. Similar results were obtained in other European countries, the United States and the Asia-Pacific region.
An article in the British Medical Journal pointed to the food industry as responsible for the high number of deaths from COVID-19. Due to the obesity pandemic caused by current processed foods which contain far too much sugar, fat or salt.
This health crisis has led to new food trends. In Britain 23% of people admitted to eating more fruits and vegetables since the epidemic. And 25% of young adults now think a vegan diet is appealing, and around 12% of Brits overall see a vegan diet as a good food option.
