In Chile the production of kiwis will be lower than last year. This drop in volume is attributed to the decrease in areas and water shortages that have affected the producing areas.
According to the data processed by Tridge, kiwi crop will be 176,000 tonnes this season, a slight drop compared to last year. This decrease can be attributed to the decrease in areas as well as to water shortages which affected the producing areas.
Exports are also expected to decrease, to around 150,000 tonnes (153,000 tonnes in 2019). The Hayward variety representing 97% of exports.
Kiwis are harvested from mid-March to mid-May. At the end of March, the main export markets for Chilean kiwis were: Latin America (40%), followed by Asia (26%), then North America (19%), then Russia (7%), Europe (7%) and the Middle East (1%).
