The free trade agreement signed between the European Union and New Zealand includes the elimination of customs duties on exports of New Zealand kiwifruit to the EU. This will allow New Zealand to increase the volume of kiwis exported to the EU.
Zespri welcomed the signing, pointing out that the company last year paid NZD 46.5 million (USD 27.7 million) in customs duties on sales that exceeded NZD 1 billion (USD 597.5 million) in the EU.
Europe is one of Zespri's biggest markets and this agreement will enable the company to increase its exports to the EU, according to its chairman Bruce Cameron.
Bruce Cameron also stressed that the company remains committed to deepening its relationship in the region. Zespri is working in partnership with a number of growers in Italy, France and Greece to produce kiwifruit as part of its strategy to establish a 12-month supply of its fruit.
