Jalisco (Mexico) will export avocados to the U.S

Mexico's Agriculture Department has reached agreement with U.S. authorities on a working plan to allow avocado exports from Jalisco (Mexico) as soon as 2022.
Michoacan avocado growers are worried that competition from Jalisco could affect their incomes.
For almost 25 years, Mexico has been allowed to export avocados only from Michoacan because orchard owners there were able to certify that their fruit was free from pests. Those orchards are also subject to compliance control by U.S. inspectors.
National production in the U.S. is complemented by imports because of the different harvest seasons in the 2 countries.
The U.S. is strict about such imports in order to protect avocado growers from damaging fungi and pests.
The department projects to start work soon with two other avocado-producing states — Nayarit and Mexico State, in order to gain approval for exports of said fruit.
