A shipment of avocados, pineapples and pitahayas was exported from the Dominican Republic to the United Arab Emirates, according to Roberto Álvarez, the Dominican Republic's Minister of Foreign Affairs (MIREX).
As for pineapples, it is the second time that the Dominican Republic exports this fruit to this destination. Its first dispatch was made in 2020. Meanwhile, for avocados and pitahayas, it is the first time.
The dispatch was carried out by the Dominican company YSM Capital S.R.L and the Emirati company Blue Bay Trade. Pineapples from Piñas Bonita, pitahayas from Tropihaya and avocados from Ocoa Avocados are now available in LuLu Hypermarkets, one of the most important retail chains in Asia and the largest in the Middle East.
The Dominican Republic has avocado throughout the year, being the second largest producer of this fruit in the world after Mexico.
The Dominican pineapple is exported to markets in the US and Europe (Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands), and the Caribbean, but the main recipient of this item is Israel, with an amount of about $ 3.6 million per year.
As for the Dominican pitahaya, this fruit has been significantly promoted by the authorities of the agricultural sector, in order to stimulate exports through diversification. Today, this tropical fruit of Asian origin is very competitive, has high demand in world markets and according to the country's authorities, the sowing of this fruit has been distributed throughout the different regions, thus expanding the varietal list.
