United Kingdom
Monday 19 July 2010
National Cherry Day allows to encourage consumption of local cherries and plantation of new orchards.
In the last 50 years, Great Britain lost 90% of cherry orchards and now import around 95%of the Cherries consumed.
To preserve the British production, several campaigns are organized by CherryAid. This association gathers all Cherry Lovers – chefs, Cherry growers, producers of Cherry-based food and drink.
The National Cherry Day has been celebrated on Saturday, July 17th, through all the country with numerous demonstrations on cherries.
The British spend 60 million pounds of sterling every year in purchases of cherries.
