France
Monday 23 June 2014
FJ
It is the season of manual transplanting of Sweet Onions of the Cevennes.
1st onion in Europe to benefit from a CDO (Controlled designation of origin) in October 2003 and a PDO (protected designation of origin) in July 2008.
Production is mainly done manually, reliefs and narrow terraces of Cevennes lend themselves to little intervention of agricultural machinery. Seedlings are prepared between January and March after selection of the most consistent bulbs with the COA , on the terraces facing south or in the nursery. May and early June are devoted to transplanting as an important step.
The plants were ripped out and sorted ensuring that they are uniform (a diameter of about 4-5 mm).
They are then planted manually (55-70 plants per m²). Which represents 55 000 to 70 000 plants per 1 000 m2 and 340 working hours.
Cooperative of the Cevennes Origin brings together 85% of French producers of sweet onion.
