Since 2001, there had been no such catastrophe. 95,000 hectares are under water.
70 percent of citrus fruits, and especially lemons, are grown in this area and orchards are currently flooded. But another important crop, that of vegetables and fruits grown under glass, was hit. The combination of rain and strong winds ravaged most of the greenhouses, destroyed with the products they protected.
According to official authorities, it is currently impossible to quantify the damage because farmers can not return to their land to try to save anything.
Cultures have not only been affected. The town of Mersin was found under water and as well from the damaged material, unfortunately victims are counted.
Improved weather conditions are expected this week and aid measures should be put in place. The region could be declared a "disaster area" in the coming days.
