Banana, ideal for increasing exports
FJ
Zimbabwe seeks to diversify its agriculture to increase its exports. The country is already exporting tobacco ( US $ 600 million in exports ) , corn, wheat and bananas. A recent study showed that of all agricultural products , it is bananas that have the best potential.
National production is estimated at 15 000 tonnes and could expand rapidly. To the east of the country, a large area of ??3255 hectares seems particularly appropriate to this crop. The available area could produce more than 30 000 tonnes of bananas.
According to a study banana production is more profitable than other crops. The sale price of a tonne of bananas is 2 times higher than the ton of corn and 5 times higher per tonne of tomatoes.
