This year, in just 5 months, Cambodia exported a volume equivalent to 68% of the total exported volume in 2020. China remains Cambodia's largest banana market with an 87% share of volumes.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Cambodia shipped 205,024 tonnes of Cavendish bananas to foreign markets from January to May 2021. In just 5 months, a volume equivalent to 68% of the total volume exported last year which recorded revenues of $450 million for the 300,000 tonnes of fresh bananas shipped.
In 2021 China remains Cambodia's largest market for fresh bananas with nearly 180,000 tonnes, or around 87% of the total volume. The other destinations are Vietnam (25,113 tonnes), Singapore (480 tonnes) and Japan (333 tonnes).
Cambodian banana exports have recorded remarkable growth since China opened up its market. Chinese demand leads to the expansion of cultivation areas in Cambodia. In September 2019, companies in banana production only cultivated 10,000 hectares, in September 2020 the areas reached 30,000 hectares.
Bananas are one of the main Cambodian agricultural products exported to international markets, along with cashews, peppers, beans, mango and vegetables.
