This year the avocado production is exceptional and causes an 'Avolanche' in the Australian market (Photo: goodfruitandvegetables.com.au).
In Australia, avocado production is exceptional this year and is causing a glut. Prices are falling and growers want consumers to favor Australian avocados over imported avocados.
According to John Tyas, managing director of Avocados Australia, the bumper domestic production has caused a glut and some farmers are forced to throw away their avocados, due to falling prices that no longer allow packaging and shipping to markets.
The importation of avocados into the Australian market further exacerbates this situation. Yet this year New Zealand avocado exports to Australia are down 40% from the previous season, with just 2.6 million trays (5.5 kg) forecast according to NZ Avocado.
Avocados Australia wants consumers to favor Australian avocados because this year's production largely meets domestic demand and therefore there is no need for imported avocados.
