Remarkable development of Moroccan avocado production and its exports. A further increase in volumes is expected for the 2021/22 season.
In Morocco, new avocado orchards are coming into production and the volume for this 2021/22 season will increase further. According to industry analysts, the volume exported for this 2021/22 season should reach 40,000 tonnes, or + 21% compared to the previous season.
The growth in exported volumes is remarkable: Morocco exported 6,269 tonnes of avocados in 2016 and 33,000 tonnes in 2020. The European Union market absorbs 90% of Moroccan avocado exports.
The areas of avocado trees are estimated between 6,000 to 7,000 hectares, mainly located in the north of the country, in the Gharb region. Made up mainly of young orchards, Moroccan avocado production will continue to experience very strong growth in the years to come. With the objective of reaching 100,000 tonnes within 5 years.
The Moroccan production calendar begins with the Zutano and Bacon varieties from September to November, then with the Fuerte variety from November to January, and with the Hass variety from November to April.
