About 80% of the world's almonds are grown in California, and about 70% of California's production is exported. However, entry to India, the main export market, is currently difficult due to containment measures.
California produced about 2.5 billion pounds (1.1 billion kilos) of almonds in the last season. About 70% of California's production is exported and India is the main market.
To contain the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, India has taken containment measures. But these measures hindered the arrival of migrant workers, which disorganized the ports. Curfews and restrictions on cargo add to the difficulties in getting California almonds into the country.
A prolonged interruption in shipments could cost the California almond industry dearly. For American professionals it is still difficult to see how the Indian federal government and the local governments of the various states will be able to implement a rapid return of the activity.
