Jordanian fruit and vegetables can now be exported to Saudi Arabia after 21 years of prohibition.
After 21 years of being prohibited, Jordan has resumed exports of fruit and vegetables to Saudi Arabia after the country lifted its ban.
Since 1990 deliveries have stopped due to claims of the use of wastewater for irrigation in Jordan. Negotiations between the two countries have focused on techniques, standards, and quality control. An agreement has been reached and exports have now resumed with fruit and vegetables for export to Saudi Arabia irrigated by wells.
The last year exports were permitted Jordan shipped 213,228 tonnes of fruit and vegetables to Saudi Arabia. According to the Jordanian Ministry of Trade, the country exported about 750,000 tons of vegetables and fruits last year to the Gulf States: Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and Europe.
