With a total of 34,300 ha, Murcia strengthens its role as great producer of organic foods and now ranks sixth among Spanish autonomous communities as for surface devoted to organic agriculture.
In detail, according to the latest data released by the Council of Organic Agriculture of the Region of Murcia CAERM, “within organics production, fruit and vegetables acquire increasingly importance in our region”.
Pedro José Pérez Saura, technical director of CAERM, stated that “last year the surface devoted to organic vegetable cultivation, including greenhouses, was around 1,500 ha. For fruits, organic fields exceed 400 ha”. These data, Pérez highlighted, show the region’s consolidation with organics farming.
CAERM estimates that this year fruit and vegetable organic fields will reach 2,000 ha.
90% of the Murcia’s fruit and vegetable production is destined to exports, mainly to the UK, Germany and France.
