In Nepal, fruit imports continue to grow

Imports continue to grow, particularly for apples, oranges, lemons, mangoes and grapes (Photo RSS/thehimalayantimes.com).
Although the government had announced greater fruit self-sufficiency in the future, rising living standards are leading to increased imports of fruits such as apples, oranges, lemons, mangoes and grapes.
According to the Customs Department, Nepal imported fruits worth NPR 6.6 billion (USD 54 million) in the first 4 months of the current financial year 2021/22. orange, lemon, mango and grape were imported in greater quantities during this period.
Apple is the most imported product by Nepal, according to the Customs Department, with 38,359,133 kg worth NPR 4.3 billion (USD 35.2 million). The apples were imported mainly from China worth over NPR 3.2 billion (USD 26.2 million) and from India worth over NPR 1.1 billion (USD 9 million).
Next in the ranking, follows the orange with 14,570,000 kg imported for a value exceeding 780 million NPR (6.3 million USD) and mainly from India. Then, lemon with 6,884,396 kg imported for a value of about 540 million NPR (4.4 million USD) and then mango with 9,574,534 kg imported for a value exceeding 450 million NPR (3.6 million USD) those imported from India, Thailand and Uganda. The grape reaches 4,893,008 kg imported with a value exceeding 450 million NPR (3.6 million USD).
Nepal has imported other fruits which together, according to the Customs Department, are worth around NPR 3 billion (USD 24.5 million): pineapples from India, avocados from Uganda and from Mexico, watermelons from India, pears from China, kiwis from India, pomegranates from India.
