SPECIAL FRUIT NV starts new CALINDA strawberry season
It’s already three years in a raw as Belgium company Special Fruit supply late-season winter strawberry variety Calinda to European market.
Calinda is a variety of strawberry, created by the Dutch company Fresh Forward.
Amongst this strawberry’s peculiarities, its bittersweet flavour and smooth texture, pleasant when bitten, stand out. Its size and characteristic shininess turn it into a very attractive fruit. Additionally, its high, regular sugar level with some brix degrees above 7 is also worth mentioning.
« Сalinda strawberry has evolved into the best alternative to a tasty, Spanish spring strawberry as it has an incredible shelf life, a deep red colour, and a sweet, juicy flavour» - Sarah Hellemans from Special Fruit explains.
The plantation is made in October and the fruit is harvested from January to May, with an average of 600 to 800 grams of product per plant.
Calinda has been cultivated in Spain, Andalucia. Recently, they have started producing strawberries also in Portugal in the regions that are even drier than Andalusia and obtained very good results. Today Calinda is cultivated in Portugal and Spain.
« We have so strong belief in this variety that in the past year, we have invested in more cultivation land in new regions, full-time cultivation assistance, and new, innovative 400-g packaging. The strawberry’s sustainability was also taken into account. Our ambition is to cultivate a strawberry in the near future that is certified “zero residue” under the supervision of the Zerya specialists. In addition to this, organic Calindas are also available» - continued Sarah Hellemans.
Growth in volume, hectares, and number of partners, Special Fruit has experienced big changes. The company plans to work with 5 million kilograms in the next season.
