Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has publicly thanked the P.E.I. Potato Board for its donation of 40,000 pounds of potatoes which were delivered Thursday to the Greater Boston Food Bank. “This is a tremendous gift to our low-income residents and I would like to greatly thank this organization,” Menino said in a statement Friday.
“I know the impact the rise in food, gas and oil prices have on our families and more and more people are seeking help. “Such a large donation of food at this time, when farmers themselves are worried about their own costs, is truly amazing. I would hope others recognize this act of generosity and are encouraged to do what they can for our struggling families.”
The P.E.I. board arranged for the donation as part of its celebration of the International Year of the Potato. The donation helped kick start the food bank’s participation in “Stamp out Hunger,” the United States’s largest single-day food drive to benefit the hungry.
“Boston is a very important market for our potatoes,” said board representative Ivan Noonan. “We are very pleased to contribute back to the community by providing delicious and nutritious P.E.I. potatoes for this very worthwhile event.”
