Saturday 03 May 2008
The annual Europêch meeting about the peach and nectarine industry in Europe closed on April 24 in Perpignan, (France), releasing as usual the forthcoming crop forecast for the main producing countries. We give herewith an anticipation of the main figures.
The overall European production will amount around 3,834,000 tons. Italy is still the main supplier with an estimated crop of 1,566,000 tons; Spain follows with 1,107,000 tons, then Greece with 867,000 and lastly France with 294,000 tons.
Generally speaking, all producing areas suffered from the frosts during the Holy Week in March, which caused the production drop.
Concerning varieties, it is evident that farmers are betting on varieties with major added value such as nectarines.
