Panamanian banana cooperative Coosemupar has suspended its sales to fresh fruit firm Chiquita in a dispute over banana box prices.
Coosemupar, which has been in negotiations with Chiquita for over a month in a bid to increase banana box prices in relation to production costs, has suspended deliveries to the multinational citing a clause in the contract that allows for the action in the event of either party being economically affected.
Speaking to Panamanian newspaper La Prensa, Coosemupar manager Hirisnel Sucre said the cooperative was seeking a better price from Chiquita or, if none was received, it would consider offers from Spain, Italy and Russia.
Coosemupar has asked for an increase of US$1.25 per box to cover a rise in production costs, which have been affected by higher oil prices.
