Tuesday 26 June 2007
The Institute for Food and Agricultural Research and Technology IRTA (Institute of the Research and Agroalimentary Technology) de Catalonia (Spain) has developed four new varieties of almond tree characterized by late harvesting. This reduces risk of damage due to frosts.
Goal of this investigation direction is obtaining that this traditional cultivation "could evolve and convert into a more modern, rentable and sustainable one".
The name of the four new varieties are "Vario", well tolerant to draught and fusicoccum; "Constantí", good-producing performance, strong and adapting to cultivation in dry land and "Marinada" and "Tarraco", both with excellent producing capacities.
