Zespri withdraws 100,000 trays from export
MD
Zespri has been notified by that a Bay of Plenty-based kiwifruit picker has contracted the gastrointestinal bacterial disease, typhoid.
Health authorities reported that the risk of contaminated fruit is extremely low, but Zespri decided to react immediately to remove any fruits that have been in contact with the affected person. According to authorities, the sick person is a foreign worker who was carrying the disease before entering New Zealand.
Zespri has withdrew 100,000 trays of kiwifruit for a value of about NZ $ 800 000. Zespri has a highly sophisticated supply chain with quality traceability systems and this has allowed us to quickly identify the location of fruit and isolate it.
This withdrawal is less than 0.1% in exports this year; Zespri expects to export more than 100 million trays of kiwifruit.
