47% of Spanish exported melons come from Murcia

The region of Murcia has produced nearly half of Spanish exported melons.
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture show that 47% of Spanish melons sold abroad come from the region of Murcia. During the season of 2013, the region of Murcia exported over 194,000 tons of melons, which represented 87% of its total production.
In value terms, this exports of melons exceeded 133 million euros last year. If the exported volumes in 2013 are lower than those exported in 2012 (204,000 tons) there has been no decline in revenue due to the gradual increase in prices over the past decade (+42% in 10 years). Over the same period, the exports of Spanish melons increased by 19%, those of the Murcia region by 58%.
Melons of Murcia region are exported to 16 European countries, the first four client countries (France, Germany, UK, Netherlands) absorb 84% of exports.
