Drought causes a shortage of potatoes from Jersey
MD
The Great Britain will face a shortage of potatoes from Jersey due to a dried climate never seen for 34 years.
The Channel Islands, which harvest the Royal Jersey variety , have received only a quarter of the expected rains between March and May. The harvest, with this drought will be sharply lower, between 25 and 30% less than last year.
Very popular in Great Britain and beneficiary of the PGI and EU, the Jersey Royal potatoes usually reach a production of 45,000 tons. Cultivation of potatoes is the most important export of the Jersey island, which report £ 65 million.
