La Tomatina festival returns to Bunol after a 2-year lapse
VU
On Wednesday, people on the streets of Bunol (Spain) threw some 130 tons of over-ripe tomatoes at each other celebrating La Tomatina festival. The 75th edition of the food fight holiday was finally held after a 2-year lapse due to the pandemic.
The Tomatina originated by accident on the last Wednesday of August in 1945 during a parade in People's Square. A few youngsters made one of the participants fall, while the crowd became angry and started throwing tomatoes that they found on a nearby vegetable stand. The tomato throwing became a tradition and continued for a few years until it was banned in the early 1950s at the height of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship, but was reborn across the country in the 1980s and today attracts visitors from all over Spain and abroad.
Almost 10 years ago, the organizers had to limit the capacity and started selling tickets, as the festival was overly crowded.
