State of Emergency for bananas from Costa Rica
FJ
National emergency decreed against a double invasion of insects which threatens banana production.
SFE (fitosanitario Servicio del Estado), the Phytosanitary Service of the State has declared a public health emergency to fight two parasites that affect 24,000 hectares of bananas. These parasites, "Diaspis boisduvalii" and "Pseudococcus elisae" cause weakening of plants and black spots on bananas.
This declaration of state of emergency will allow the rapid import of bags impregnated with chemicals (Buprofezina, Bifentrina). These bags will be distributed exclusively to affected producers.
SFE estimates that 20% of the banana crop in the country could be affected. In Costa Rica, banana, one of the main agricultural products of the country, occupies 41,200 hectares, its exports yield about $ 500 million per year.
