The expansion of urban farming in Japan through Infarm's partnership with Summit Inc.
Infarm, one of the world's largest urban agriculture platforms, announced a partnership with Summit Inc., 100% owned by Sumitomo Corporation to offer fresh produce grown and harvested at the company’s Summit Store (supermarket). Infarm will be installed its first farms at Summit’s Gotanno location in December 2020, and produce will be available for purchase at the store of one of Tokyo's leading supermarket chains at the end of January 2021.
Erez Galonska, co-founder and CEO of Infarm, commented millions of people will get access to fresh, sustainable produce in Japan's urban centers, thanks to a partnership with Summit, which is committed to offering customers high-quality food at all price points while reducing waste.
According to Ikuo C. Hiraishi, Managing Director, Infarm Japan, the company continues to experience positive momentum with this second major partnership in Japan. The first was a partnership with JR East (East Japan Railway Company), food retailer Kinokuniya and national food distributor Muroo Co. "We believe our approach to farming will be attractive to Tokyo consumers. Our clients can be sure that our harvesters have taken care of each plant as if it were in their very own garden, full of flavor and pesticide-free," he added.
Infrarm's most advanced, easily scalable and rapidly deployable modular farms can transform any retail space. Every such individual farm is connected and remotely controlled from a central farming platform that gathers the latest growth information about each plant.
Company’s staff regularly harvests mature plants from the farms and place them at the point of sale, then plant new seedlings for the next cycle. Thanks to their alive roots, fresh plants are free of pesticides and full of nutrients and flavor.
Infarm, founded in Berlin in 2013, is one of the world’s fastest growing urban farming network, harvesting and distributing over 500,000 plants each month. Currently, with cutting edge R&D, patented technologies and a leading multi-disciplinary team, the company operates in France, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Luxembourg, the United States, Switzerland, Japan and the United Kingdom, where it has deployed over 1,200 farms in stores and distribution centers.
