The red Tropea oigon PGI has a unique softness.
The "Cipolla Rossa of Tropea Calabria IGP" is the only onion that can claim more than 2000 years of history.
While the cultivation of onions spread in Europe during the Middle Ages, Calabria cultivated onions since antiquity. The onion was introduced by the Greeks and Phoenicians. The Roman author Pliny the Younger mentions the virtues in Naturalis Historia.
The
Cipolla Rossa of Tropea (Tropea oigon red) is renowned for its softness. The microclimate near the Tyrrhenian Sea and sandy soils give it a unique taste. Very popular in kitchens, Cipolla Rossa of Tropea is either round (outside bright red, sweet flavour) or conical (more assertive flavor, sweet and sour).
