Torrential rains led to a reduction of 16% of the banana production in Colombia.
In the first quarter of the year, banana production in Colombia has declined of 16% compared to 2010.
The rainy season has caused flooding that have disrupted production. Some plantations are damaged or devastated. In the banana region of Uraba, nearly 10% of the 84,000 hectares were flooded and will be replanted at an estimated cost of 10 million U.S. dollars.
By disrupting the production of the Uraba region, heavy rains have led to a reduction of 16% of national production according to AUGURA, the banana growers' association.
