The new association brings together the major players in the sector: MSC, A. P. Moller-Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express.
Five companies (MSC, AP Moller-Maersk, CMA-CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express) intend to create an association to prepare the ground for digitization, standardization and interoperability in the container shipping sector.
IT managers MSC, A.P. Moller-Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express are discussing the creation of common IT standards, which will be available and free to all stakeholders in the container shipping industry.
"This is in the interest of customers and all stakeholders if container shipping companies operate with a set of common IT standards," said André Simha, CIO of MSC and spokesman for the group. "We are striving to cut red tape and improve transparency, and this is a good time because emerging technologies are creating new opportunities, and together we are gaining power by bringing technological breakthroughs and additional services to our customers."
The association will be a neutral and non-profit organization. Without the intention of developing or exploiting a digital platform, but with the objective of ensuring interoperability through standardization. The association will not discuss commercial or operational issues. Its activities are expected to begin in a few weeks, the initial members (MSC, A. P. Moller-Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express) invite all shipping companies to join the association.
