The proposal of the Regional Councilor for Agriculture of the Emilia Romagna Region (Italy) to set up a code of rules for the standardization of the relations between growers and large retailers has been welcomed by EU professionals.
European fruit and vegetable regions represented by AREFLH have welcomed the initiative of the Regional Councilor for Agriculture of the Italian Region Emilia Romagna, Mr. Tiberio Rabboni, to propose a code of rules of conduct standardizing the relations between producers and organized retailing distribution. This proposition was presented to the Agricultural Policy Commission of the Italian Regions Conference and sent to the Italian government.
In a statement the Association stresses that the European Union Commission, which was already awared by the AREFLH on the situation of production prices, will have to consider the necessity of accelerating the implementation of a more stable and more sustainable device of relations between suppliers and retail chains, with the purpose of facilitating a better transparency in the contractual relations and insuring a less important volatility of the prices than today.
"If this situation continued, it would put in trouble the producers who do not succeed any more in covering their production costs and the consumers dissuaded by high prices at the stage of the distribution and who, consequently, limit their purchases of fruits and vegetables" the statement reads.
Luciano Trentini, Producers College President, appreciate the proposition of a code of good commercial practices whose consequences will be positive for the whole sector and will allow to guarantee a future to Italian and European fruit and vegetables industry.
