For non-compliance with export procedures and banned chemicals.
Kenyan authorities have canceled the licenses of 66 exporters of fresh products for breaking the rules in force. The country submits exporters to certain rules: declaration of the place of production, inspections of storage and packaging facilities, compliance with foreign regulations. Controles are performed once a quarter.
These 66 exporters did not provide evidence justifying the compliance with procedures. Some have marketed products containing chemicals (dimethoate, organophosphate) carcinogenic, banned in Europe.
At the beginning of this year, the EU has revised downward its standards on maximum residual levels. Hundreds of producers have not respected these standards and have not have been able to access export markets. Between last year and the month of July, the number of approved exporters of fresh produce passed from 200 to 134.
