Since the end of March, due to a wave of COVID-19, the port of Shanghai has experienced major disruptions. But the situation is improving and a quick return to normal is expected.
Global Times announces that the Port of Shanghai's turnover in the 1st quarter of 2022 increased by +8.14% compared to the previous year, to reach 12.26 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). But due to a wave of COVID-19 since the end of March, the port of Shanghai has seen major disruptions. Mainly disruptions resulting from road congestion and a lack of truck drivers, according to SIPG (Shanghai International Port Group).
Nearly 60% of shipments from sea and air terminals were blocked, according to a logistics services professional. But various measures have been taken by the authorities to restore and ensure the fluidity of transport.
Activity has picked up, with shipments in and out of the port rising from less than 10,000 TEU at the height of the outbreak to more than 20,000 TEU a day, depending on the port. The return to normal is accelerating.
The expected improvement in the coming weeks may even cover some of April's losses, according to Wu Minghua, an independent shipping industry analyst in Shanghai.
