The Port of Hueneme stands out as an efficient and productive commercial trade gateway for specialized cargo along the West Coast of the United States. It consistently ranks among the top ten ports in the United States for handling automobiles and fresh produce. Furthermore, it earned the title of the Greenest Port in the U.S. at the Green Shipping Summit, recognizing its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
Governor Gavin Newson has allocated $80 million to the Port of Hueneme for projects that promote fairness and economic growth while transitioning the port to a zero-emission hub. The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) played a key role in distributing $1.5 billion from the Port & Freight Infrastructure Program (PFIP) funds, which were approved in the Governor's 2023-2024 budget on June 30, 2023. This was announced by the CalSTA Secretary Toks Omishakin at a press event held at the Port of Long Beach on July 6, 2023.
The Port of Hueneme will receive $79.8 million for its strategic PACED (Port Action, Climate, and Environment Development) project. This project ensures a smooth, flexible, and resilient supply chain while maintaining operational excellence and creating employment opportunities. It also focuses on improving air and water quality, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and promoting transportation equity and environmental progress.
Specifically, the project involves the removal of dilapidated buildings, installation of zero-emission plug-in units for containers, and the development of fuel cell technology infrastructure. Additionally, it includes deepening berths for efficiency and safety improvements, enabling the replenishment of local beaches with clean dredged sediment. The funding also supports shoreside power and emission control systems, making vessels emission-free while in the port. Furthermore, it facilitates port-wide crane electrification and the procurement of zero-emission cargo handling equipment.
Assemblymember Steve Bennett emphasized the positive impact of this investment, stating that residents will enjoy cleaner air and workers will find better job opportunities.
