This week, through an online meeting, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) of Peru and the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile (SAG) discussed the question of prioritizing the access of grapes, passion fruit and bell peppers to the Chilean market.
Both parties have confirmed a work plan that they developed in December 2019, when they established the products of interest for both countries and, although there is a priority to achieve the agreements for the export of mentioned products, the procedures are also carried out for other Peruvian fruits as cherimoya, sweet lime and aguaymanto.
Chile is a significant commercial arena for Peru, with 18 million consumers. Each year they supply around 88.000 tons of Peruvian agricultural products, representing 6.000 shipments on average per year.
Hass avocado became one of the most popular Peruvian products in Chile, where consumption per person increases every year, which is beneficial for small producers from Apurímac, Ayacucho, Áncash, Huancavelica and Cusco, which contributed to the agro-export boom in Peru.
Onion, squash, watermelon and mango have been gaining a stable position in the Chilean market for several years, thus generating greater interest in what Peruvian farmers grow.
In July 2020, Chile and Peru signed the bilateral agreement that started electronic certification in the agro-export procedures of both countries, accelerating the access of more Peruvian products to this destination.
The certification exchange with Chile has been developed through the Single Window for Foreign Trade (Vuce), achieving more than 7.500 shipments in 2020 and 57 shipments already made in 2021.
