Increasing surfaces, multiplying greenhouse facilities, volumes of exported tomatoes are progressing.
The growing areas of tomatoes have multiplied in a few years, reaching just over 25 000 hectares. Production has increased and exports have increased, tomato being now the main agricultural product for export.
Citing the Russian Federal Customs Committee, the Azerbaijani media announced that the country has been the leader in 2017 of tomato suppliers in Russia. Azerbaijan exported 151,000 tonnes of tomatoes to Russia. Azerbaijan's share of Russian tomato imports increased from 22% in 2016 to 30% in 2017.
Russia is the main customer with 99.8% of total tomato exports in 2017 but Azerbaijan plans to diversify its markets. Notably to the Middle East, to Europe and the Baltic countries where shipments to Latvia have started.
