The current situation has resulted in a decrease in volumes of fruit imported by Hong Kong (Photo: facebook Aussie Mangoes).
Hong Kong is the 8th export market for Australia. The mango sector is concerned about the impact of the current troubles on its exports.
The current problems in Hong Kong have direct consequences on export markets. Retail trade and tourism are particularly affected, the number of visitors has halved, the hotel and restaurant industry is slowing down and demand for fruit is falling.
With the increase in fruit volumes in the coming weeks, AMIA (Australian Mango Industry Association) is worried about the impact on prices.
Replacing a market like Hong Kong and finding other opportunities will take some time. The Australian mango export sector needs to further diversify its markets. Indonesia has recently increased its tariffs on Australian mangoes from 20% to 12.5%, which suggests an increase in demand.
Hong Kong is the 8th largest export market for Australia, worth about AUD 13 billion a year (US $ 8.8 billion).
