The city of Jiuquan (northwestern Gansu Province), which is located on the edge of the Badain Jaran Desert, has for some years been launching a program to build greenhouses in the desert. Already more than 1,666 hectares of greenhouses have been installed.
Gansu Province has a long and narrow route between the Mongolian Plateau to the north and the foothills of the Tibet Plateau to the south. Jiuquan District with Jiuquan City is located in northwestern Gansu Province. On the edge of the desert of Badain Jaran, the city was struggling to develop its economy.
In recent years, a program of greenhouse construction in the desert has been launched. There are now 1,666 hectares of greenhouses where vegetables, edible mushrooms and grapes are grown.
Greenhouses use drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation, which reduces water consumption by up to 50% compared to normal farm operations. The water used comes from the Qilian mountains (5500 m of altiude). The prolonged sunlight and the significant temperature difference between day and night favors crops.
Greenhouses use the latest technologies, from the point of view of culture, controls and monitoring of water and fertilizers, but also temperature and humidity in real time and remotely controllable through applications on smartphones.
