Some bomb shelters of Second World War are reconverted into agricultural farm.
A network of tunnels under the London metro, originally designed as air raid shelters during the Second World War, has been converted into agricultural land. The various tests lasted 18 months, but entrepreneurs now plan to convert 2.5 hectares of disused tunnels in hydroponics farm.
The method of hydroponic cultivation consists of growing plants in a solution rich in minerals, on platforms with growth specially designed and under conditions of controlled temperature and lighting. Depth, 33 meters below ground maintains a constant temperature. LED lights consume little energy, and water circulation system involved in low carbon balance of the conpany.
The 1st crop produced peas, arugula, broccoli, sorrel, chives as well as edible flowers and miniature vegetables. It is also planned to grow mushrooms and tomatoes.
