Spectacular growth of banana exports to China
FJ
Spectacular growth (and temporary , it seems ) of Ecuadorian banana exports to China.
An analysis of AEBE , the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador, banana shipments to China are booming. The country exported an average of 217,000 boxes per week until the end of June 2014 a total of 4.12 million boxes , about 70,000 tons; compared total exports in 2013 reached 20,000 tons.
This growth in the Chinese market can be explained by several factors , political and weather . Territorial disputes in the South China Sea between the Philippines and China, lead to complications and trade barriers between the countries of the region.
Climatic factors, then , played a major role in affecting the production of the Philippines ( typhoons) and Chinese domestic production ( adverse weather conditions in Hainan and Yunnan regions). Production decreased in the two countries, thus contributing to increased imports of bananas from Ecuador.
Climatic factors are improving, as a result banana production will recover to previous levels in the Philippines and China . This increased output will mechanically reduce imports and thus reduce exports from Ecuador or other countries.
Ecuador did not solve its main problem : the journey to the port of Shanghai needs 35 days by sea while that from the Philippines only 3-5 days.
