Strong international demand has benefited Peruvian garlic, which recorded a + 54% increase in value.
For the period January to November 2020, Peru has just recorded a spectacular increase of + 54% in value for its garlic exports compared to the same period of 2019
Between January and November 2020, Peru exported 10,429,104 kilos of fresh garlic valued at $ 21.999 million. This result represents a growth of approximately + 54% compared to the 10,092,000 kilos exported over the same period in 2019 for a value of $ 14.271 million.
According to Agrodata Peru, the main destination for these shipments was Mexico which purchased for $ 14.574 million (66% of total shipments). Next come Ecuador with $ 4.106 million, the United States with $ 1.754 million, Brazil with $ 586,673, Australia with $ 486,673, Colombia with $ 191,465 and other markets with smaller amounts which together total $ 299,683.
Peru is one of the top 20 garlic-producing countries, well behind China which represents on average 78% of total world production and exports only 8% of its production. But due to the cessation of Chinese exports, many markets have had to redirect their purchases. And according to MINAGRI, the Ministry of Agriculture, there will be good possibilities to access these new potential markets whose demand would be equal to the volume exported by Peru in 2018 (659,000 tonnes).
