The frost in the Murcia region affects the crops of artichokes, beans, lettuce and other vegetables.
According to Asaja, the year began with low temperatures in the Guadalentín Valley and Campo de Cartagena plantations.
In the early morning of January 4, the temperature reached five degrees below zero.
It damaged the artichoke, zucchini and bean crops.
It is expected that lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower production will also decelerate.
Miguel Padilla, the president of the Coordinator of Farmers and Ranchers (Coag), commented that the cold has frozen the artichoke and blackened the plant, and now it is unsuitable for sale. This vegetable is extremely sensitive to changes in temperature. Plantations in Totana and Alhama de Murcia were also affected.
Alfonso Gálvez, the Secretary General of Asaja Murcia, specified that the artichoke has been especially damaged in Guadalentín and Campo de Cartagena, along with vegetables under plastic such as zucchini.
As for lettuce, the cold has damaged the outer leaves.
In the case of broccoli, which is more resistant, only the most recent plantations were affected.
According to ASAJA Murcia, the economic losses caused by these frosts cannot yet be assessed, but they will be significant.
