Japan’s vegetable market shows sharp price differences

Weather and changing arrivals are creating an uneven market.
Wholesale vegetable prices in Tokyo moved in very different directions at the end of July, according to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
On July 30, cucumber prices were 55% above their five-year seasonal average, while potato prices were 44% higher. Cabbage and Chinese cabbage were also elevated, by 28% and 29%, respectively.
Carrots showed the opposite trend, trading 35% below the seasonal average. MAFF’s daily figures are based on transactions at major wholesale markets and compare current prices with average levels for the same part of the year.
Gap may narrow in August
MAFF expects cucumber prices to remain above normal in August after rain, low temperatures and a sudden rise in heat slowed crop development in key producing regions.
Carrot prices are expected to remain below average during the first half of the month as supplies increase. Potato and cabbage prices, meanwhile, are forecast to move closer to normal seasonal levels.
