Thailand is using its restaurant network abroad to build familiarity with products used in Thai cooking.
Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce is looking to Thai restaurants in India as a way to support wider demand for Thai food products and ingredients.
During a visit to New Delhi earlier in September, a Thai delegation met representatives of Erawaan, a Thai SELECT 1-Star restaurant at The Claridges New Delhi.
From meals to ingredient demand
The ministry said Thai restaurants overseas can do more than promote the country’s cuisine.
As consumers become familiar with Thai dishes, restaurants can also support demand for imported products including vegetables and fruit.
Erawaan serves modern interpretations of Thai cuisine alongside traditional dishes and mainly targets middle- to upper-income customers, business diners and international visitors.
15 Thai SELECT restaurants in India
India currently has 15 restaurants carrying the Thai SELECT label. Five hold a two-star rating, six have one star and four are in the Casual category. New Delhi accounts for four of them: Erawaan and three Thai SELECT Casual restaurants.
Thailand uses the Thai SELECT programme to promote recognised Thai restaurants overseas and support the broader international market for Thai food and ingredients.
