Mindanao is strengthening its durian industry through international support focused on cooperatives, processing and branding.
In the southern Philippines, Mindanao is taking steps to strengthen its durian industry as part of a broader effort to raise farm incomes and expand access to global export markets. During a recent meeting in Seoul, regional development officials welcomed additional international project support aimed at improving production, processing and market positioning for durian growers.
The initiative focuses on strengthening producer cooperatives, improving on-farm practices and moving the sector beyond fresh fruit sales. Planned actions include organic fertiliser trials, pilot projects for frozen durian products, and the development of branding strategies to support international market entry.
According to regional development officials, the project is designed to help transform Mindanao’s durian sector into a more competitive and resilient export industry, while ensuring that value creation reaches farmers and producer groups. By improving organisation at farm level and expanding processing options, the programme aims to stabilise income and reduce dependence on domestic fresh markets.
The collaboration forms part of wider efforts to link Mindanao’s agricultural sectors with overseas partners, technology providers and buyers, as demand for tropical fruit products continues to grow across Asia and beyond.
