After 31 December 2019, EU support to the banana sector in Africa will not be extended, according to statements by an EU representative.
Launched from 2013 to 2019, this support, or stabilization mechanism of the European banana market, allowed the ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean, Pacific) to be partially protected from competition from other countries. After 31 December 2019 it is not possible to renew the support, according to the statements of Jobst von Kirchmann, EU representative at a meeting in Ivory Coast with officials of Afruibana, a pan-African association of banana producers and exporters.
Among the reasons for this suspension are the free trade agreements concluded between the EU and Latin American countries, one of whose elements stipulates the cessation of this European support.
